Judi Kaufman is along-time community activist and entrepreneur; she is also an active member of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Jewish Committee. Her most recent book of poetry was Passion and Shadow: The Lights of Brain Cancer. In 2000, following her first diagnosis of brain cancer, she founded Art of the Brain at UCLA Medical Center.
Art of the Brain is a non-profit international organization committed to helping patients survive through art while raising awareness of this epidemic disease. She is now a two-time brain cancer survivor, having had a recurrence in 2003. She has continued to chair the annual Gala for Art of the Brain. Among the themes for the Galas at UCLA are Let’s Not Be Afraid to Be Friends; Bravery of the Brain; Music of the Heart; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow; and The Hungry Mind. In 2006, she spearheaded Craving Bonus Time, while also developing the concept of a new tribute book focusing on recipes, poetry and memories. Judi believes that a recipe is like a poem: pithy, creative and insightful. Today, Judi is in the process of inventing a team in Israel called Light of the Brain, for children with brain cancer.
